Specific Job Responsibilities
Seeking an Electrical or Computer Engineer to join a team that is designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs. This engineering team employs state-of-the-art technologies, including sophisticated software tools for design, analysis, modeling, and simulation. Responsibilities for electrical engineers range from conceptual design, detailed hardware design (a combination of analog, digital, embedded firmware, schematic capture, board layout), detailed software design (instrument drivers, system integration, database design/interface, report generation, related software quality assurance documentation), analysis, overseeing fabrication of hardware, defining and executing qualification/testing plans, field support, as well as project management. Successful candidates will work in a team environment with opportunities to acquire increasing levels of responsibility.
Designs and develops software applications used to automate complex instrumentation systems, perform calculations on and manipulate very large data sets, interface with databases, create user friendly operator interfaces, and consolidate results into legible reports. Opportunities also available to contribute to design and improvements to the database architecture.
Applies integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses--to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to CNS Pantex missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.
Designs and develops new electronic and electromechanical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Researches and develops the theory and application of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, computational intelligence, and other electronic components for use in test equipment. Researches and develops solid-state integrated circuits, including computers, communications, signal processing, or optoelectronics. Assesses capabilities of existing components, equipment, systems, and networks. Utilizes industry standard concepts for electrical grounding/shielding/bonding concepts to all hardware designs.
The employee primarily performs work requiring advanced knowledge. The advanced knowledge must be in a field of science or learning; and the advanced knowledge must be customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. Advanced knowledge is generally used to analyze, interpret and make deductions from varying facts or circumstances.
Specific Job Knowledge & Training Required
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, delegation, teamwork, and negotiation. Independence and strong problem-solving skills. Advanced technical degree or significant equivalent experience. Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position. Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific and engineering methods and with the discipline's standards for the ethical conduct of research. Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing research, design, and development projects. Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
Plans, conceives, conducts, or manages research and development for CNS's customers and sponsors. Initiates, designs, develops, executes, and evaluates new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research. Uses engineering principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions. Undertakes creative work, making systematic use of investigation or experimentation, to discover or revise knowledge of reality, and uses this knowledge to devise new applications.
Must possess knowledge of analog and/or digital design, RF design, embedded processing, and software development. Varying degrees of competence in any of these categories may be acceptable. Understanding of telemetering concepts would be advantageous.
